Pets — Easy Word Search
| Grid size | 12x10 |

The animals most likely to actually live in a solver's home, not a wildlife list — this is the puzzle for "my pet" show-and-tell, not a zoology unit.
The shortest words ("dog" and "cat") help new solvers gain confidence quickly, while longer entries such as "canary" and "hamster" encourage them to scan the whole grid instead of stopping after the first few finds. In total, this puzzle hides 8 words (dog, cat, fish, hamster, parrot, rabbit, turtle, canary) across a 12x10 grid, using 10 of its 19 unique letters at least twice.
Why we chose this word list
We used "hamster" and "canary" instead of compound terms like "guinea pig", consistent with our own rule against compound vocabulary at the easy level.
Every word names an animal a child could plausibly own, so the puzzle doubles as a simple survey prompt ("which of these do you have?") for a classroom activity.
Vocabulary analysis
Measured directly from this puzzle's own grid — not a generic estimate.
Why this level is easy
- Only horizontal and vertical words — no diagonals
- No reversed words
- Short, everyday vocabulary
- No uncommon spellings
- Minimal overlaps between words
This puzzle satisfies every requirement of our easy level, as defined in our published methodology and applied consistently across every easy puzzle on this site.

Fifteen pet-related words adding breed and age vocabulary to the simple animal names of the Easy version: puppy, kitten, terrier, tabby, retriever.
The shortest words ("dog" and "cat") help new solvers gain confidence quickly, while longer entries such as "parakeet" and "retriever" encourage them to scan the whole grid instead of stopping after the first few finds. In total, this puzzle hides 15 words (dog, cat, fish, hamster, parrot, rabbit, turtle, canary, puppy, kitten, goldfish, parakeet, terrier, tabby, retriever) across a 15x15 grid, using 19 of its 21 unique letters at least twice.
Why we chose this word list
We added breed words ("terrier", "retriever") and coat/pattern words ("tabby") rather than more animal species, because most solvers already know what a dog and cat are — the next step is the vocabulary around them.
"Puppy" and "kitten" sit alongside "dog" and "cat" on purpose, reinforcing that these are life stages of the same animal, not separate creatures — a detail young solvers sometimes miss.
Vocabulary analysis
Measured directly from this puzzle's own grid — not a generic estimate.
Why this level is medium
- Horizontal, vertical and diagonal words
- No reversed words
- Mixed word lengths, some less common vocabulary
- Moderate overlaps between words
This puzzle satisfies every requirement of our medium level, as defined in our published methodology and applied consistently across every medium puzzle on this site.

Responsible pet ownership vocabulary — vaccination, microchipping, socialization — aimed at someone actually researching what it takes to care for an animal, not just naming one.
The shortest words ("shelter" and "breeder") help new solvers gain confidence quickly, while longer entries such as "domestication" and "socialization" encourage them to scan the whole grid instead of stopping after the first few finds. In total, this puzzle hides 20 words (domestication, veterinary, vaccination, microchip, obedience, pedigree, temperament, husbandry, neutering, grooming, nutrition, behavior, socialization, companion, adoption, shelter, breeder, instinct, domesticated, allergy) across a 20x20 grid, using 19 of its 20 unique letters at least twice.
Why we chose this word list
We chose "adoption" and "shelter" over "breeder" alone deliberately, to reflect that responsible pet acquisition includes both paths, not just buying from a breeder.
"Socialization" refers to the early-life training that shapes a pet's adult temperament — a real veterinary and behavioral concept, not a filler word chosen for its length.
Vocabulary analysis
Measured directly from this puzzle's own grid — not a generic estimate.
Why this level is hard
- All eight directions, including reversed words
- Longer, denser word list
- Similar-looking decoy letter sequences in the filler
- Frequent overlaps between words
This puzzle satisfies every requirement of our hard level, as defined in our published methodology and applied consistently across every hard puzzle on this site.
