Cold-climate animals grouped by habitat rather than by "cute factor" — the narwhal and lemming are here because they belong to the same ecosystem, not because they are photogenic.
The shortest words ("seal" and "orca") help new solvers gain confidence quickly, while longer entries such as "lemming" and "reindeer" encourage them to scan the whole grid instead of stopping after the first few finds. In total, this puzzle hides 8 words (walrus, seal, penguin, narwhal, orca, reindeer, husky, lemming) across a 12x10 grid, using 12 of its 18 unique letters at least twice.
Why we chose this word list
We avoided the common shortcut of writing "polar bear" as two separate concepts merged into one word; compound animal names are excluded from our easy vocabulary on principle.
Sea mammals (walrus, seal, narwhal, orca) and land animals (reindeer, husky, lemming) are balanced roughly evenly, so the puzzle doesn't skew entirely marine despite "Arctic" often being read that way.
Vocabulary analysis
Measured directly from this puzzle's own grid — not a generic estimate.

- No reversed words
- Short, everyday vocabulary

Fifteen polar animals adding the less obvious tundra wildlife (ptarmigan, ermine, muskox) to the sea-mammal-heavy Easy list.
The shortest words ("seal" and "orca") help new solvers gain confidence quickly, while longer entries such as "reindeer" and "ptarmigan" encourage them to scan the whole grid instead of stopping after the first few finds. In total, this puzzle hides 15 words (walrus, seal, penguin, narwhal, orca, reindeer, husky, lemming, ptarmigan, beluga, caribou, ermine, muskox, stoat, puffin) across a 15x15 grid, using 19 of its 22 unique letters at least twice.
Why we chose this word list
We deliberately balanced this list toward land animals (ptarmigan, ermine, muskox, stoat) since the Easy version already leaned heavily marine — a fuller picture of Arctic wildlife needs both.
"Caribou" and "reindeer" are the same species by different regional names; we kept both because solvers in North America and Europe each expect their own term, and the overlap is a genuine, teachable fact.
Vocabulary analysis

Why this level is medium
- Horizontal, vertical and diagonal words
- No reversed words
- Mixed word lengths, some less common vocabulary
- Moderate overlaps between words
This puzzle satisfies every requirement of our medium level, as defined in our published methodology and applied consistently across every medium puzzle on this site.

The vocabulary of Arctic survival itself — permafrost, blubber, insulation — explaining how life is possible in one of the planet's harshest climates.
The shortest words ("polar" and "tundra") help new solvers gain confidence quickly, while longer entries such as "hibernation" and "conservation" encourage them to scan the whole grid instead of stopping after the first few finds. In total, this puzzle hides 20 words (tundra, permafrost, hibernation, blubber, camouflage, migration, predator, adaptation, insulation, ecosystem, glacier, iceberg, polar, subzero, hibernate, carnivore, territory, conservation, endangered, wilderness) across a 20x20 grid, using 20 of its 22 unique letters at least twice.
Why we chose this word list
"Blubber" and "insulation" are included together because they are the two real physiological answers to "how do these animals survive the cold" — a question every Arctic-themed puzzle should actually answer.
"Permafrost" is a specific, technical term describing permanently frozen ground, included because Arctic ecosystems are increasingly discussed in the context of climate change, not just as a stage for wildlife.
Vocabulary analysis
Measured directly from this puzzle's own grid — not a generic estimate.
Why this level is hard
- All eight directions, including reversed words
- Longer, denser word list
- Similar-looking decoy letter sequences in the filler
- Frequent overlaps between words
This puzzle satisfies every requirement of our hard level, as defined in our published methodology and applied consistently across every hard puzzle on this site.
