Dinosaurs — Medium Word Search
| Grid size | 15x15 |
|---|---|
| Words to find | 10 |
| Font size | 13 pt |
| Paper | A4 & US Letter |
| Answer key | Included |

Full dinosaur names rather than shortened forms, because the scientific names are exactly what makes this vocabulary satisfying to spell out and find — shortening them would defeat the point.
The shortest words ("rex" and "raptor") help new solvers gain confidence quickly, while longer entries such as "pterodactyl" and "brontosaurus" encourage them to scan the whole grid instead of stopping after the first few finds. In total, this puzzle hides 10 words (rex, raptor, triceratops, stegosaurus, pterodactyl, brontosaurus, fossil, extinct, jurassic, predator) across a 15x15 grid, using 14 of its 19 unique letters at least twice.
Why we chose this word list
We intentionally started this theme at Medium instead of Easy: our own Easy specification calls for short, everyday vocabulary, and dinosaur names are neither. Forcing them into an Easy grid would mean breaking our own rules to hit a difficulty label.
Long words like "brontosaurus" and "pterodactyl" were placed first by the generator, before any shorter word, precisely because they are the hardest to fit into the grid.
Vocabulary analysis
Measured directly from this puzzle's own grid — not a generic estimate.
Why this level is medium
- Horizontal, vertical and diagonal words
- No reversed words
- Mixed word lengths, some less common vocabulary
- Moderate overlaps between words
This puzzle satisfies every requirement of our medium level, as defined in our published methodology and applied consistently across every medium puzzle on this site.

Twenty full scientific genus names and the vocabulary of paleontology itself — this is the puzzle for someone who has moved past "dinosaurs are cool" into wanting to know the real names.
The shortest words ("triassic" and "iguanodon") help new solvers gain confidence quickly, while longer entries such as "parasaurolophus" and "pachycephalosaurus" encourage them to scan the whole grid instead of stopping after the first few finds. In total, this puzzle hides 20 words (paleontology, carnivorous, herbivorous, cretaceous, triassic, extinction, fossilized, vertebrate, prehistoric, excavation, archaeopteryx, ankylosaurus, velociraptor, allosaurus, diplodocus, pachycephalosaurus, spinosaurus, iguanodon, carnotaurus, parasaurolophus) across a 20x20 grid, using 19 of its 22 unique letters at least twice.
Why we chose this word list
Every genus name here is spelled in full, including "parasaurolophus" and "pachycephalosaurus" at their full length — shortening them would defeat the point of a Hard-level puzzle built around real paleontology.
We included the geological periods ("Cretaceous", "Triassic") because knowing which dinosaurs lived in which era is a genuine distinction paleontology teaches, not a detail most dinosaur puzzles bother with.
Vocabulary analysis
Measured directly from this puzzle's own grid — not a generic estimate.
Why this level is hard
- All eight directions, including reversed words
- Longer, denser word list
- Similar-looking decoy letter sequences in the filler
- Frequent overlaps between words
This puzzle satisfies every requirement of our hard level, as defined in our published methodology and applied consistently across every hard puzzle on this site.
