Eight sea animals that most children can already name before they start reading: short, high-frequency words with clear, distinct shapes so no two words look alike at a glance.
The shortest words ("fish" and "crab") help new solvers gain confidence quickly, while longer entries such as "seahorse" and "starfish" encourage them to scan the whole grid instead of stopping after the first few finds. In total, this puzzle hides 8 words (fish, crab, shark, whale, octopus, seahorse, starfish, dolphin) across a 12x10 grid, using 12 of its 18 unique letters at least twice.
Why we chose this word list
We left out "eel" and "seal" together, since a three-letter word and a four-letter word sharing the same three starting letters is exactly the kind of near-miss that slows down a beginner.
Every word here appears in early primary school reading lists, so the puzzle reinforces vocabulary a child is already learning rather than introducing new words.

Why we chose this word list
We included both "coral" and "barnacle" deliberately: they share no letters in the same positions, so any overlap between them is a genuine intersection rather than a lucky coincidence — a fairer test of the diagonal search.
Words like "plankton" and "mollusk" are here because they show up in upper-elementary science units on ocean ecosystems, not because they were easy to fit in the grid.

Why we chose this word list
We chose scientific terms over common names on purpose: "cephalopod" instead of just "octopus" turns this into vocabulary practice for a marine biology unit, not a repeat of the easy puzzle with a bigger grid.
Long words like "bioluminescence" and "hydrothermal" were placed first, before anything else, precisely because they are the hardest to fit — the algorithm gives them first pick of the grid, then works down to the short filler words.
