Ten baking basics that describe the process and the everyday breads that result from it.

The shortest words ("oven" and "loaf") help new solvers gain confidence quickly, while longer entries such as "pretzel" and "baguette" encourage them to scan the whole grid instead of stopping after the first few finds. In total, this puzzle hides 10 words (bread, dough, flour, yeast, oven, loaf, roll, baguette, biscuit, pretzel) across a 12x10 grid, using 13 of its 20 unique letters at least twice.

Why we chose this word list

We included both the process words (dough, yeast, oven) and finished breads (loaf, baguette, pretzel), so the list reads as a small story of how bread is made, not just a list of shapes.

Every word here is something a family could point to while actually baking bread together, making the puzzle useful alongside a real kitchen activity.

Fifteen words for specific bread styles and the hands-on steps of real bread-making: kneading, proofing, scoring.

The shortest words ("rye" and "crust") help new solvers gain confidence quickly, while longer entries such as "multigrain" and "lamination" encourage them to scan the whole grid instead of stopping after the first few finds. In total, this puzzle hides 15 words (sourdough, ciabatta, brioche, focaccia, rye, multigrain, kneading, proofing, leavening, gluten, starter, crust, crumb, scoring, lamination) across a 15x15 grid, using 17 of its 21 unique letters at least twice.

Why we chose this word list

"Starter" refers to the live sourdough culture bakers maintain and feed — a real, ongoing process rather than a one-time ingredient, which is why sourdough bread tastes different from yeasted bread.

"Scoring" (cutting the dough before baking) and "lamination" (folding butter into dough, as in croissants) are genuine techniques, each doing a specific, different job.

Twenty terms from real bread science — autolyse, the Maillard reaction, gluten elasticity — the chemistry a serious home baker or professional actually studies.

The shortest words ("enzyme" and "starch") help new solvers gain confidence quickly, while longer entries such as "gelatinization" and "caramelization" encourage them to scan the whole grid instead of stopping after the first few finds. In total, this puzzle hides 20 words (fermentation, hydration, autolyse, gelatinization, maillard, enzyme, microbiome, elasticity, extensibility, caramelization, oxidation, fortification, milling, germination, diastatic, retardation, protein, starch, lactobacillus, temperature) across a 20x20 grid, using 21 of its 21 unique letters at least twice.

Why we chose this word list

The "Maillard" reaction is the actual chemical process that browns a crust and creates flavor — the same reaction responsible for browning in searing meat, named correctly here rather than simplified into "browning".

"Autolyse" is a specific, real technique (resting flour and water before adding yeast or salt) that professional bakers use to improve dough structure — precise, not decorative, vocabulary.
